Orlando, FL—A Tavares woman was struck and fatality injured by an unmarked Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) van, while she was crossing U.S. Highway 441, near Sadler Avenue. The pedestrian was hit around 10:50 p.m., on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 near Zellwood, as reported by News4Jax.com.

The unmarked 2006 Chrysler OCSO minivan, driven by Steven Smith, 30, of Orlando, was reportedly traveling northbound on U.S. 441, when he struck the 44-year-old woman. According to preliminary reports, the woman was apparently trying to cross Orange Blossom Trail at Sadler Avenue when she was struck and killed by the unmarked van. Smith was reportedly traveling at the legal speed limit, and desperately tried to avoid hitting the woman, but it was too late for him to swerve out of the way before striking her. No further details about the collision have been released at this time. The identity of the woman is currently being withheld pending proper family notification. It is unknown if the woman died at the scene or if she was transported to an area hospital for treatment by doctors and nurses before her injuries proved fatal. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the fatal wreck. Charges are pending.
