Construction accident on the Florida Turnpike causes fatal injuries to worker.
Fort Lauderdale, FL—A turnpike construction worker was tragically killed early Tuesday morning when he was struck by a dump truck while on the job site. The fatal accident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. according to a report given by CBS News. Arturo Moradiellos, 64, was allegedly standing behind the dump truck being driven by his fellow coworker, Enrique Arnaiz Betancourt, 45, when the incident occurred. Police officers reported that when Betancourt began to back up, Moradiellos presumably failed to hear the backing alarm in time and was killed on the scene. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), both construction workers were working on the Turnpike Widening Project as a part of a private construction sector near the Commercial Blvd. exit ramp. Only one lane on the northbound turnpike remained open for roughly two hours so the Florida Highway Patrol and other police officers could investigate the scene of the unfortunate construction accident.
According to data collected though the Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov), there were 155,420 construction related accidents recorded in 2003 where most of these incidents caused the injured party to miss over a month of work. It was also noted that fatal injuries acquired in the private construction sector have declined by 20 percent comparing years 2007 and 2008.
