Panama City, FL—A massive fire engulfed the Citadel Center on Wednesday afternoon, which continued to burn well into late Wednesday night. The massive inferno ignited on October 7, 2009 around 4:30 p.m., at the Citadel Center on U.S. Business 98, as reported by NewsHerald.com.
The relentless blaze reportedly did not injure anyone, but employees of the Citadel Center reported three people were inside the building earlier that dayNo one knows if the three people made it out alive. The intense heat of the blaze apparently could be felt from across the street. Fifty firefighters and rescue teams were reportedly treated at the scene of the fire for heat-related illnesses. Red Cross volunteers from the Central Panhandle chapter were at the scene with ice and water to help battle the dehydration and exhaustion.
It is currently not known what sparked the fire. When responding firefighters arrived, the flames were shooting 25 to 35 feet in the air. The fire knocked out power for 2,000 customers residing in the area of the blaze. U.S. Business 98 was shut down for the entire night on Wednesday due to the fire. The multi-business building was completely destroyed in the blaze. Police officials and fire officials are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the fire.
