Phoenix, AZ—A two-vehicle crash involving a school bus left one teenager dead, and another in critical condition after their car slammed into the side of the school bus. The fatal collision happened on Wednesday morning, September 23, 2009 around 7:35 a.m., at 12th Street and Union Hills Drive, as reported by AZCentral.com.
According to police officials, a school bus was making a left-turn onto south 12th Street, when an eastbound Volkswagen hatchback on Union Hills Drive hit the bus on its side. Majority of the Volkswagen hatchback was reportedly crushed underneath the bus, which trapped the driver and a passenger. Officials with the Phoenix Fire Department had to use heavy-duty equipment to cut through and extract the victims from the wreckage. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews. The passenger was in serious condition and was rushed by EMS teams to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. The school bus driver was also injured, it is unknown if the driver was transported to the hospital. There were no students on the bus when the crash occurred. Phoenix police officials are reportedly conduction a full investigation into the fatal crash.
