Conshohocken, PA–IKEA Home Furnishings has participated in a voluntary recall of approximately 500 units of sofa beds. IKEA is a furniture distributor based out of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. The recall was issued after federal regulators discovered the sofa beds posed a fire hazard. The seat cushions of the sofa bed, also used as a mattress, and the mattress violate the federal mattress flammability standard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) www.cpsc.gov announced the recall on August 27, 2009.
The item under federal recall is the IKEA KARLSTAD sofa bed. A label is attached to the bottom of the sofa bed frame with article number 801-215-12, supplier number 20789, and date stamps of 0845 to 0927. The mattress topper is not a part of the recall. A photo of the recalled product can be found on the CPSC website at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09331.html.
The sofa beds retailed for approximately $850 from November 2008 to July 2009. The recalled products were available for sale in IKEA stores across the U.S. The sofa beds were made in Mexico. No injuries related to the recalled units have been reported. The Montgomery County firm urges customers to stop using the recalled cushions and mattress.
