North Carolina personal injury attorney alert- A head on collision with a pickup truck is caused by elderly couple traveling in wrong direction.
Hickory, NC—An elderly couple caused a head-on collision with a pickup truck when they drove the wrong way on U.S. 321, which killed one woman. The two-vehicle crash happened on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 just before 2 p.m., as reported by WSOCTV.
The Highway Patrol states, it is unknown where the couple got on the highway in the wrong direction because it is impossible for them to cross over the median because of cable barriers, which separate the lanes. The wrong-way driver, Jessie Buff, 75, and his wife, Daisy May, were traveling northbound in a white sedan on the southbound lanes. Witnesses claim they tried beeping their horns and waiving their hands at the Buff to get him to stop. According to reports, Buff was driving in the middle of the highway when he slammed into a pickup truck head-on. Daisy Mae reportedly died on impact in the collision, and Jessie suffered severe injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, Howard Helton, of Maiden, also suffered serious injuries from the wreck. Area emergency medical services (EMS) crews airlifted Buff and Helton by medical helicopters to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment. Highway Patrol is reportedly conducting a full investigation into the fatal wrong way head-on collision.
