Perry, OK—A sport utility vehicle (SUV) rollover on Interstate 35 killed three people and injured four others when the tread on a tire of the SUV separated. The rollover occurred on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 12:50 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-35, as reported by the Stillwater News Press.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol stated 2002 Ford Explorer driven by, Angel Rafael Chevez-Flores, 39, of Perry, Iowa, ran off the side of the road when the tread of the rear tire detreaded. The SUV sideswiped the center median and rolled four times. Five people were ejected from the vehicle before the SUV could come to a stop. The five ejected passengers were identified as, Luis Felipe Lopez-Cabrera, 24; Celia Cruz-Chevez, 19; Roger Cruz, 17; Gladys Cruz-Gonzales, 37; and Jordy Cruz-Chevez, 10, who are all from Perry, Iowa. Another passenger, Miguel Angel Cruz-Martinez, 39, of Perry, Iowa also received injuries in the crash, but was not ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Cruz-Martinez was transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to a Perry Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries to his arm. Cruz-Martinez was treated and released by attending doctors and nurses. Celia Cruz-Chevez and Cruz Gonzales were transported by EMS personnel to Perry Memorial Hospital where they were pronounced dead by hospital staff. Lopez-Cabrera was also transported by EMS ambulance to Perry Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to another hospital for further treatment. Jordy Cruz-Chevez was airlifted to the Oklahoma University Medical Center for treatment of his leg injuries. Police officials are conducting an accident investigation of the single vehicle rollover wreck.
